Using a blog on a residential trip

I’m just back from a residential trip with 20 of our KS3 GLD learners. Hard work, but fun.

I experimented with using a blog to compliment the usual diary work. Our children have limited literacy and the use of images and movies is invaluable. I chose to create a blog on blogger.com. It was essential to password protect the blog to protect the identity of many of our children. Blogger.com allows just that.

It proved to be a fantastic shared space where the children could share their experiences and ask each other questions. Most definitely a proof of concept. I will certainly develop the idea for future residentials. I am also looking forward to creating a shared blog between our partner school in Ghana, New Horizons Special School and ourselves.

  • Interested in your ideas re using blog on residential trip. Not sure what sort of trip you went on obviously different from the one I led…. not one spare moment when I was not up to my ears in mud, water, cooking, etc.
But I like the idea. Completely new to this blog thing. Wonder whether this bloggle get to you.

  • Thanks for your comment, Kate.

I integrated it into diary time – and being SEN it mostly involved uploading digital pictures. I’m sure you took photos anyway – so the additional workload was not too bad. Set yourself up a gmail account – email me and I can send you the link and password and you can have a look for yourself. It’s nothing fancy – and is surprisingly easy to organise.

  • I can also offer you help and advice. People tell me I am extremely good and patient at explaining technology to the less able!
